Tequila. The most expensive. Looking for a way to spend all those jackpot millions you’ve been dreaming of? Why not stock up your liquor cabinet with some of the world’s most expensive tequilas? While the cheaper versions may have you pulling a face, in fact good quality tequila is a tipple worth savouring. And we’ve found just the selection for you to invest in. Whether you prefer yours with an aroma of honey or caramel. With the flavours of spice or wood, or in silver, gold or reposado, we’ve got the tequila to suit your palate and your pocket. After you hit that jackpot, of course…

1. Tequila Ley .925 Pasion Azteca – $3.5 million

We’ve mentioned this before in a previous look at the world’s most expensive drinks, but it’s worth going over again. That’s because with a price tag of $3.5 million, it’s difficult to ignore! It’s Tequila Ley .925 Pasion Azteca and it’s pure extravagance inside and out. In fact we would say it’s luxury in a bottle. But in this case, the luxury is the bottle itself. That’s because this is no ordinary glass bottle. Instead it’s one crafted from no less than 3.6kg of pure platinum and embellished with more than 6,400 diamonds, for a total of 415 carats.

Created by Jose Davalos Mejia and first sold in 2010. The bottle is a masterpiece in its own right – never mind the 7- year barrel-aged 100% select agave tequila inside. At $3.5 million. Tequila Ley .925 Pasion Azteca is no ordinary spirit. It’s one worth showcasing and savouring. So no shots here. Only immense appreciation, and maybe the odd sip now and then, just because you can.

2. Ley .925 Ultra-Premium – $225,000

Taking a step down from $3.5 million but still hugely extravagant in its own right, it’s Ley .925 Ultra-Premium. The same brand as our most expensive tequila, but this time a little less heavy on the pocket. Coming in at $225,000 per bottle. In fact while it’s not the most expensive on our list. It was the most expensive in the world for a time. When it was first released in 2006. Thanks to its eye-watering price tag. It was awarded a Guinness World Record. And while this record has since been surpassed, it’s still one of the priciest tequilas money can buy.

If you’re looking to add it to your collection, you may have a hard time. Given the fact that only 33 bottles were ever made. Filled with 6-year barrel-aged tequila distilled from blue agave. Each bottle is crafted from pure white gold, yellow gold and platinum too, giving it premium showstopper status. There’s no hiding this bottle at the back of your liquor cabinet. Instead give it its own pedestal on which to shine, and make sure you save it for a very special occasion!

3. Clase Azul 15th Anniversary Edition – $30,000

You may have heard of Clase Azul before but you haven’t heard of the 15th Anniversary Edition. That’s because only 15 bottles were ever made, with the $450,000 profits donated to the Fundación con Causa Azul A.C. charity.

More of an exhibition piece than a regular tequila. Each of the 15 bottles was designed by a different Mexican artist. Creating a wholly unique look for each individual one. The tequila inside each bottle was also just as unusual – a blend of two different tequilas. One aged for 15 years in a Spanish sherry barrel. With the other first aged for 6 years in a port barrel. And then 5 years in an American white oak barrel. While a 15th anniversary is usually celebrated with crystal, we can’t think of a better way of celebrating this one than with an exquisite bottle of tequila. Painstakingly crafted both inside and out. Or, if you manage to get your hands on one of these rare finds, pour yourself a measure in a crystal glass and enjoy the best of both worlds!

4. Patrón En Lalique: Serie 2 Tequila – $7,500

If you know quality crystal, you know Lalique, and if you know quality tequila, you know Patrón. Put them both together and it’s a match made in heaven! That’s exactly what the Patrón En Lalique: Serie 2 Tequila is – a combination of the finest crystal glassware and tequila that’s a follow-up to the original Patrón En Lalique set from 2015.

Now featuring a French crystal decanter with a white gold gem stopper. Only 299 bottles of Patrón En Lalique: Serie 2 Tequila have been made. Which accounts for their $7,500 price tag. If you want to display yours as a centrepiece, its skilful craftsmanship allows it to stand on its own. But if you do want to taste the tequila inside. You’ll be treated to a bright gold, crystalline extra añejo. Aged for 8 years in French and American oak, and sherry barrels. Enjoy it’s vanilla and oak notes, it’s gorgeous fruity finish, and make a toast to design and flavour perfection.

5. Patrón x Guillermo Del Toro Añejo Tequila – $1,500-$2,500

If you’ve heard of movies like Pan’s Labyrinth and the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water. Then you’ll have heard of Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. Famous for his unique vision, he’s now brought that same creativity to a brand of aged tequila – more specifically, the Patrón x Guillermo Del Toro Añejo Tequila. Housed in an upside-down bottle with an accompanying golden liqueur. The tequila is a blend of the finest extra añejo with a sweet fruity taste and an oak and agave finish. As fantastical as the director himself. This collector’s item is no longer produced – but if you’re lucky enough, you might find one to showcase in your own home. It could be just what you need to make movie night that much more exciting!

Feeling like having a shot of tequila yet? We don’t blame you, we’re feeling a little thirsty ourselves. Of course until we actually win that life-changing casino jackpot we’ll just have to make do with regular brands of tequila – but once that big one hits, look out world, here we come!

  • Wow those all sound so good but if I was to choose one it would have to be number 3. Aged in the sherry and then port barrels it must be amazing.
